The company

Sphinx’s mission is to accelerate the pace of biotech research by empowering scientific teams to make better decisions, faster. The role

As a senior software engineer at Sphinx, you will have a tremendous influence on the direction of the company. You will work directly with customers and and be responsible for building software solutions to their problems. You should be excited about 0→1 problems and feel comfortable working fast, cutting through ambiguity and keeping focused on customers and impact. You should also want to mentor and work with really smart junior engineers.

From a technical perspective, be prepared to work across the stack — from designing data pipelines to building visualization frameworks. As a small team, we expect engineers to be generalists (though it’s ok if you have a set of areas where you’re stronger). We are also looking for first-principles thinkers. Scientific data and workflows has a different set of challenges than other industries, and you will have the opportunity to design novel solutions to difficult problems. As a senior engineer, you will be expected to do everything from system design and planning to implementation of large scale systems from scratch.

Our tech stack is primarily Python + Typescript.

This role is onsite in San Francisco.

About you

Have built applications from 0 → 1

Are comfortable working across the stack from data pipelines to building UIs

Have spent a lot of time dissecting and designing systems

Lead by example and gets fulfillment from sharing knowledge with others

Thrive in fast-paced environments with high uncertainty

Enjoys working on hard problems directly impacting human and planetary health

Want to work directly with customers and think about product challenges in addition to engineering ones

Like taking ownership and driving the direction of the company as it grows

Enjoy working closely with scientists and learn more about science (no prior scientific experience required)
